Monarchs are migrating...but why?

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is undergoing its annual migration and the first butterflies have just started reaching their winter home in Mexico. There, they will spend the next 4+ months in "hibernation." But why and how did this migration begin in the first place?
