How to Photograph Birds in Flight

I'm in the field right now, photographing in Borneo, and just had to share some fresh images...the photos I've captured over the past two weeks are some of the best I've ever captured in Borneo!

A few of the most noteworthy happen to be on a topic I've discussed in detail on my podcast, on how to photograph birds-in-flight, so I wanted to pair this with my Wild Photographer episode dedicated to this topic. You can listen to the full episode by clicking here.

Right off the bat, we encountered this amazing white-bellied sea eagle and the timing was perfect.

But what's a photo trip to Borneo without some incredible hornbill sightings, too?

Below we have one of my favorite birds in Borneo--the rhinoceros hornbill and captured in perfect sharpness on-the-wing.

Remember, if you want to capture birds like this, I'm here to help! Check out my full episode on this technique here.

The great thing is that these same techniques can be used to photograph nearly any moving wildlife, especially the tree-swinging orangutans that make Borneo so famous.

Another magical moment occurred just days ago, with a male and female orangutan feeding in the trees and pausing for a brief moment to look at the camera. You've got to wonder what this great ape is thinking...I know I was thinking 'holy moly, this is the perfect shot'.

I'm excited to share more with you as I process them and the best place to keep tabs on recent photos is my Instagram page, which you can find here: @court_whelan.

And if you'd like to learn how to level-up your photo game, be sure to check out and subscribe to my photo tutorial podcast - The Wild Photographer.

Until next time!

What a great set of shots. Was this the Canon 100-500 you often refer to in your advice on travel kit?
